Reduction in Glasgow knife crime

Interesting figures obtained last week by the Evening Times newspaper indicate that there has been a reduction of almost 40% in knife attacks in the Glasgow area compared to last year’s figures.

In the period 2012-2013 there were 903 recorded knife attacks as opposed to 1,439 in the period 2011-2012. When the figures for 2006-2007 are considered the reduction amounts to around 57%, down from 2,138 such attacks.

Speaking to the Evening Times, Chief Superintendent Andy Bates attributed the reduction in part to an increase in the use of stop and search powers, which, as reported last month, have doubled. He also thought that increased police visibility on the streets had had an impact.

Earlier this year, Glasgow was identified in a report by the Institute for Economics and Peace as the most violent area in the UK. This was largely down to knife crime and the city’s gang culture, said the report. See our earlier blog for more details.
