David Fitzpatrick

David has a diverse education and background. In 2007 he graduated with an honours degree in Chemistry from the University of Glasgow. Having contemplated the idea of becoming an academic, which saw him briefly research the science behind ring-closing methasis reactions, David decided to become a lawyer. He completed his LLB and Diploma in Legal Practice at the University of Glasgow between 2008 and 2011. After training with another defence firm in Glasgow he joined Beltrami & Co in 2015.

David has conducted summary and Sheriff and jury trials throughout Scotland. He has defended and assisted counsel in most types of criminal prosecution including:

His scientific background gives him a keen eye for detail and a forensic approach to the preparation of his cases. He has assisted counsel in representing a series of complex cases including successfully defending a Czech national accused of a fraud with an element of people trafficking. He was the instructing solicitor in the reported case of PB and VW v HM Advocate in which the late Lord Jones clarified the position of police officers exercising statutory search powers. His decision was confirmed in the appeal decision of McGaughey v HM Advocate. This is a decision that David has utilised to great effect notably having a client acquitted in circumstances where he had made comments after having being stopped and searched by police officers.

His determination and effective advocacy has obtained absolute discharges for clients convicted of possession of class A drugs, regulatory offences, breach of the peace and domestic assault. He was part of a legal team to achieve an acquittal in a recent high profile High Court case

David has travelled widely particularly throughout Europe and the South Pacific. He was awarded a scholarship to travel to and work at a school in Melbourne, Australia for 6 months in 2003. He enjoys reading, running and pub quizzes.
