Man to Admits Finding Thief Who Stole Son's iPhone Using App and Killing Him

A father has admitted to killing a theif who sole his son's iPhone during an attack in Inverclyde. Derek Grant, 38 confronted the robber Patrick Bradley on 30 August last year, after he had held up Mr Grants son and stolen his iPhone.

The High Court in Glasgow heard that Mr Bradley had stabbed Mr Grant leaving him blinded in one eye, and following this attack the accused stabbed him leading to his death.

Mr Grant has been kept in custody at the High Court in Glasgow, andis to be sentenced next month. The was original charge for the crime was murder, however Mr Grant pleaded guilty culpable homicide, a lesser charge.

The accused’s son, Jordan Grant had been walking to his home in Greenock when he encountered Bradley, who has an established record of violence.

Bradley ordered Jordan Grant to give him his iPhone which he did. After returning home he told his father who then used a mobile app to trace the stolen phone. The accused left his home with Jordan and his two younger sons in pursuit of the phone. They found Bradley and Grant ordered him to return the stolen phone.

The encounter turned violent when Bradley lashed out at Grant stabbing him in the eye, to which Grant responded by repeatedly striking out at him with a knife he had brought from his home. Bradley died after suffering a cardiac arrest following the incident, Grant was also left blinded in one eye.

Grant said after his arrest:

"I wish to declare for the record that at the time of this incident, I was acting in self defence."

Prosecutor, Douglas Fairley QC agreed Grant had suffered a "significant" degree of provocation prior to the assault on Bradley which caused his death. The three sons of Grant who accompanied him to find Bradley also faced murder charges -their pleas of not guilty were however accepted.
