Stephen specialises in family law and employment law and is adept at building trust, right from the first meeting. He inspires confidence in his clients by quickly identifying the relevant issues and by carefully exploring all of the potential consequences of decision making.
Stephen’s career began in journalism, where he developed a keen interest in the justice system. His interest was such that, after a decade in the newspaper industry, he changed tack and studied, trained and qualified as a Solicitor.
Stephen is now vastly experienced in representing clients in a wide range of contentious issues. His experience of the newspaper industry is of particular advantage to his clients where matters of public relations arise or where reputation is at stake.
Stephen appears regularly in the Sheriff Court, dealing with all types of family dispute arising from cases of divorce and separation. His expertise and recent experience includes issues of child relocation and the law relating to the protection or sharing of property and pensions.
Stephen has successfully obtained a court order for shared parental care in a case where his client’s contact was being withheld following a disagreement about medical care for a child with additional support needs. He has also managed to obtain a court order for the production and delivery of a child’s passport, the day before a pre-arranged holiday.
In the field of Employment law, Stephen is equally comfortable in acting for the employee, as he is the employer. This gives him a particular insight into all aspects of an employment dispute; enabling him to offer accurate and effective advice. On behalf of an employer, Stephen has successfully defended a claim brought against it by 62 employees under the TUPE regulations. Stephen has also raised claims for damages in respect of discrimination in the workplace on behalf of numerous employees; successfully achieving awards and settlements amounting to many tens of thousands of pounds.
